TAKE A BREAK ….
An important part of being a carer is taking time for yourself. It is so important that you get time to recharge your batteries, whether that means taking a walk, reading the newspaper, meeting with friends, whatever lets you destress.
HelpingMinds can provide you with some ‘time out’ options – massage days, walking groups, yoga classes as well as short breaks away in one of our beach side holiday houses in Rockingham and Port Denison.
Perhaps it’s best to hear about the benefits of taking a break from other carers. Below are just a few comments that visitors to the houses have taken the time to share with us.
“A home away from home without the chaos (took 24 hours to adapt). Kids had a great time with lots of visits to the beach”
“ ..its been the most wonderful break away for us. As older carers of our grandsons – we certainly needed the break after a traumatic year. The simple life here at this home has provided just that..”
“fresh air, walk along the beach, quiet time to get myself motivated again”
“Thank you..for allowing me the time to regroup myself and thoughts. Your generosity has let me come back to the real world and put one foot in front of the other”
“it was like a sanctuary . No city noises or routine. Didn’t realise how much we needed a break until we came here”
“ it was good to look at our Perth life and take time to talk about things. It has given us a fresh outlook to face our life in Perth maybe a little differently”
“just entering here, you feel the tension slipping away”
“not only did it save us as individuals but also helped in saving our marriage….when times were extremely tough and we had no clarity you were there to support and pick us up”
“After so long caring for a loved one you lose yourself. I lost myself to stress and depression. During my stay here I found myself again, now I realise I HAVE to look after me as well”
“Felt so down emotionally and physically before I came here. Was the first get away for me in 20 years. I can’t tell you in words how much this house meant to me. I am a carer for a few people and have realised I need to take more time out for myself because I am no good to anyone unless I look after me.”
These homes are available at no charge to carers of someone close to them with a mental health condition.
HelpingMinds receives funding from the Department of Social Services to support mental health carers in order to sustain their caring roles.
Some of this funding can support the costs of staying at the HelpingMinds properties.
If you live in an area not covered by our funding HelpingMinds will work with other providers to seek funding to cover the costs of your stay.
