NDIS

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS, or National Disability Insurance Scheme, is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The NDIS is for eligible Australians who are either born with or acquire a permanent or significant disability. A ‘permanent disability’ means a person’s disability is likely to be life long, and a ‘significant disability’ means a disability with a large impact on a person’s ability to complete everyday activities.

The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports and services that relate to a person’s disability to help them achieve their goals.

If you are eligible for the NDIS and you become a NDIS participant, you will receive funding to work towards the goals in your NDIS plan that are specific to you. Everyone has different goals but they could include getting help for normal everyday living activities or equipment to help you in your home or in your community, learning new skills or getting or keeping a job, becoming more independent, or making friends and connections.

Supports Available

How can the NDIS support my Mental Health?

Psychosocial disability is a term used to describe a disability that may arise from a mental health challenge. Not everyone who has a mental health condition will have a psychosocial disability, but for people who do, it can be severe, longstanding and have an impact on living a fulfilling life. A psychosocial disability may impact on your ability to perform daily tasks, take part in society, and engage and communicate with others in your community.

If you are eligible, the NDIS will provide you with an individualised funded plan for you to access ongoing functional supports and services, to assist you with your psychosocial disability and improve your quality of life.
