Thank you Telethon! HelpingMinds ‘Steppingstones’ Grant
HelpingMinds is delighted to announce we were successful in a grant application to run our ‘Healthy Body Healthy Mind – Steppingstones Program’ proudly supported by the Channel 7 Telethon Trust. We’d like to sincerely thank Telethon for their incredible show of support in our mission to support the mental wellbeing in communities that need it the most – Thank You Telethon!
Led by our Aboriginal Engagement team, the Steppingstones Program will support Aboriginal youth living in the Broome and Derby community in Western Australia by breaking down stigma around mental health to educate, empower and enable Aboriginal children to have healthy bodies, healthy minds and make healthy choices.
This month, we’re starting our community consultations where Aboriginal youth will be paid for their time to tell us what they need, and how they’d like us to support them and their community. We welcome local Aboriginal youth (age 10 – 18yrs), family and friends, community members and other stakeholders to help us co-design the Steppingstones workshops, to ensure we deliver culturally appropriate education, awareness, and support in Broome and Derby.
Following the community consultations, the Steppingstones workshops will be delivered in 5 categories that have a cultural connection with social and emotional wellbeing for Indigenous Mind, Body, Spirit, Connection and Community. All to assist in enabling today’s Aboriginal children to become tomorrow’s leaders and role models in the community.
Through storyboarding and interactive workshops, Steppingstones aims to support Aboriginal youth mental health by improving referral pathways to health and wellbeing services, delivering psychoeducation on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and empowering goal setting. The program will also provide mentoring opportunities for young emerging leaders.
