Young People

Providing Children and Youth mental health support

When someone in your family is affected by a mental health challenge the whole family is affected. Here at HelpingMinds, we offer Youth Mental Health Support to individuals, especially to young people dealing living with issues in mental health and wellbeing.

Many children or the youth as a whole are touched by mental health challenges in various ways, this can be direct by their own condition or indirectly by a family member or friend who is experiencing mental health challenges.

HelpingMinds supports children and youth in two key ways: by providing counselling and workshops for young carers and early intervention for young people who are at risk of mental ill-health.

HelpingMinds is committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people by adopting the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations of the Australian Government. We promote a family-inclusive culture with children and their families to ensure children’s voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives, Read more about our commitment to child safety.

YOUNG CARERS:  young people who are supporting a family member living with mental ill-health

Growing up around mental illness can have a big impact on young people. It can be confusing, scary and frustrating when a family member lives with mental-ill health. To help young people understand what’s going on around them and how best to cope with the challenges, HelpingMinds® offers a variety of free youth mental health support services and programs that are fun, informative and empowering. Our programs are facilitated by mental health professionals as well as carers with lived experiences who can relate to and help young people.

Who we help: Young people in Western Australia aged 8-17 years who have a family member living with mental ill-health.

EARLY INTERVENTION:  Support for young people at risk of mental ill-health

The majority of mental health challenges will emerge before the age of 25. The earlier that young people at risk receive support the more likely they are to cope with challenging situations and emotions.

It is easy for young people to be overwhelmed by their emotions if they have no one to talk to, if they feel mis-understood or if they have no one around them that they trust. The ‘right’ support will provide them with tools and techniques to develop resilience and mental and emotional strength, and will steer them away from negative habits and behaviours.

Who we help: Young people between 0-18 years who have emotional or social difficulties or are at risk of developing a mental health challenge, living in City of Swan, Geraldton, Carnarvon, Broome. Child must be aged 7 upwards to receive counselling services.
