National Reconciliation Week 2020
‘In This Together’ is the theme of this year’s National Reconciliation Week (NRW). This could not have been foreseen when it was announced last year, but it reminds us that whether we are in a crisis or in reconciliation, we are all in this together. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and futures.
To commemorate National Reconciliation Week, we encourage you to get involved with our colour-in mosaic activity! Colour in this beautiful mural and learn a bit about Aboriginal Culture through art and the design depicted to create a story of ‘Coming Together’.
“In This Together” The story behind the artwork
This year’s theme for NRW is ‘In This Together’. The central part of the design shows of the journey of the First Nations People. Coming together from far and wide in reconciliation – with guidance from spiritual elders and in harmony with mother nature – to share stories and culture. The main design – the connection line from the people to the meeting ground – was inspired by the shape and significance of the boab trees and the special connection it has to the land in the Kimberley.
The faint background design shows meeting places and the travelling journey connecting everyone together. The vibrations and soundwaves from the small meeting places are the voices of the community connecting and sharing their journey with one another.
We are all in this together to share and grow as one.
